False Advertising January 30, 2010 Daniel J. Sifrar The box and the ad said that it was a PCI graphics card. When I received it in the mail low and behold it was an e-pci card. I'm sure that the card works wonderfully, but I can't use it.
A definite Dell Dimension 2350 Upgrade for under $50 September 2, 2009 Kourt9 (Glendale, CA) I purchased this (along with the DiabloTek 400-Watt ATX Dual 80mm Fan Power Supply from Amazon.com and two 512MB DDR PC3200 memory modules from Crucial.com) in an effort to revive an old Dell Dimension 2350 that I have. After reading several reviews and doing a little research/comparision shopping on the interweb, it seemed the EVGA 256-P1-N399-LX 6200 was best PCI video card for the limited funds I was willing to throw at the 'ol Dell.
I followed the instructions in JR's review for this video card from August 1, 2008, but I continued to get a black display. After a little Google action I found these instructions in Dell's support forums (http://en.community.dell.com/forums/t/17424537.aspx):
* Click Start- Control Panel- System
* Click the Hardware tab and the Device Manager button
* Open Display Adapters
* Double-click the Intel listing
* Under Device Usage, change this to "Do not use this device (disable)"
* Click OK- Apply and/or OK
* Close all boxes
* Click Start- Shutdown- Restart- OK or Click Start- Turn Off Computer- Restart
* Restart the system
* Press F2 at the blue Dell logo screen
* Right arrow to Advanced
* Down arrow to Peripheral Configuration- Video Adapter and change this to PCI or AUTO
* Press F10 to Save and Exit keeping your changes
* Power the system off
* Open the case cover and add the PCI video card
* Connect the monitor to the added PCI video card
* Power on your computer
* Let the computer boot up and load the drivers off of the CD provided with the card for installation
Voilà! After about a week of use since the upgrade I'm very pleased. I can use 3D modeling software on that machine now, plus the results that I have received when using CS3 and Corel Painter 10 on it seem to be more true. No - it's not a hardcore gaming macine now, but I wish I would have done this a few years ago.
great value card for older systems August 1, 2009 Jay Miller 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I'll make this short & sweet.
If you're looking for an upgrade/replacement/expansion for an older machine, this is an excellent value. The GPU & memory won't bottleneck at the interface, so you're not paying for a hot-rod card that will be held back by the (relatively slow) PCI connection.
Note that this is NOT a PCI-E card. From the photo alone you should figure this out, but if you didn't notice, this is your warning. Buying this card for a PCI-E interface will not work. Period. This is a legacy PCI card--for older systems with motherboards that pre-date PCI-Express.
Anyway, the card handles multiple-monitors just fine--I ran two 19" LCDs, each with a resolution of 1440 x 900 @ 75Hz, and could run full-frame video without a hitch. The card holds up well with gaming, though you shouldn't expect it to handle any FPS games or intensive 3D graphics--this is NOT a gaming card. My most recent game is NWN, and this card supported high frame rates (30+ fps) at highest settings. I wouldn't try WoW with this card, though.
Two things you should know about buying this card, though: 1) do NOT jump to the latest drivers. Anything more recent than the 175.16 drivers (circa February 2008) is very dicey--apparently nVidia doesn't subscribe to the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" policy, and releases new drivers that push the hardware beyond stability. Consult the nVidia forums for more details; 2) if you're buying this (or ANY nVidia) card as a second GPU to push multiple monitors, STAY IN THE SAME FAMILY WITH BOTH CARDS--that is, don't pair this card with a 5500, or a 7400, etc. Your computer will want to use only one set of drivers for both cards, and any incompatibilities between different driver sets and cards will cause you many headaches.
Bottom line: as long as you know what you're doing, and have realistic expectations, this is a great value card. If you want blazing-fast gaming, or you're adding this as a secondary GPU for a system that has a very different card as its primary, you should look at a different card. But if an nVidia 6xxx series is compatible with your system, you're going to get your money's worth and more.
Good Video card May 10, 2009 T.S I bought this video card because I have a 5yr old home built PC(it still works great) that would not support my new 2048 X 1152 resolution monitor. I installed it myself with the CD drivers installation disc and about half way thru the installation, my PC would re-boot by itself with not completing the installation. I tried it 3 times and it would not install, so I had to go to EVGA tech support and they served me the driver installation over the web and i got the video card installed, and their tech support also helped me re-configure my PC settings from VGA to PCI, and disable the old video system. Other than that problem, the video card works excellent. I went from 1200 resolution to over 2000, slightly higher than regular HD. The card comes with a DVI-I to VGA adapter so if you have a older PC like I have, your covered. I dont know if i just got a video card with a bad installation CD or what? But i wont give it a bad rating for a minor problem like that...
Great May 2, 2009 S. Wallen (Dayton, OH) Simple to install, works great. I had a really crappy graphics card. I couldn't use Second Life, but now I can...no problems.
