Studiophile AV 40 Compact Desktop Speaker System

Professional Components--Professional Results
The Studiophile AV 40 monitors are designed with the same quality materials and internal electronics that are used in M-Audio's acclaimed professional monitors. You'll find features like audiophile-grade Class A/B amplifier architecture and balanced 1/4-inch TRS inputs in addition to RCAs. It all adds up to a big sound that belies the speakers' small size. With the Studiophile AV 40s, you don't have to give up professional-grade fidelity to enjoy the ease and mobility of a compact speaker system.

Extended Low End
If you require extra bass response, the Studiophile AV 40 speakers have you covered. MDF wooden cabinets, bass reflex design and an integrated bass boost switch let the Studiophile AV 40s crank out plenty of low end--perfect for urban/dance music, DVDs and more.

OptImage III Technology
M-Audio's proprietary OptImage III wave guide improves overall detail and clarity while minimizing sound issues that can plague other compact monitors. The system works by improving the overall efficiency of the tweeter as well as time-aligning the drivers. This ensures that the audio from each driver reaches the listener at the same time, guaranteeing precise stereo imaging and accurate response.

Magnetically Shielded for Desktop Use
Unchecked, all speakers emit electromagnetic waves that can wreak havoc with your computer's video monitor or a nearby TV. The Studiophile AV 40 speakers are magnetically shielded so that all of your electronic equipment can coexist on your desktop without interference.

5 out of 5 stars Both AV30 and AV40 are great!   September 9, 2010
Broke Audiophile (New Haven, CT USA)
I purchased the AV30 (also from Amazon) and was so delighted I went ahead and got the AV40. Fantastic price for performance. Works great hooked up to a computer and TV. Great for low-budget set-ups.

1 out of 5 stars Sounded great, but completely unreliable   September 4, 2010
Chris
I purchased these (brand new) to upgrade over my old Altec Lansing 2.1 system. The Altecs may have been old, but they were at least reliable.

First, the pros:
These sounded great at first. I'm not into bass-heavy music and these seem to offer a good, neutral sound with tight, punchy bass and smooth highs that don't sound shrill or harsh. They feel relatively substantial. They take up a decent amount of desk real estate, but not excessive and you don't have to deal with a subwoofer eating up floor space. At first I was very pleased.

The cons:
After six months or so of use, I noticed my music getting quiet and extremely distorted (after around 10-15 minutes of music). Turning up the volume on my computer just resulted in even more distortion and clipping. Turning of the volume on the AV 40s did virtually nothing (although the volume know does work in the first few minutes of being on). I assumed this was a driver issue with Windows 7 since there are a huge number of sites documenting audio problems with the OS (many of them sounded exactly like what I was experiencing-quiet audio after playing at least a few minutes of music, typically occurring near the end of songs).

I went through everything I could think of to fix it, trying different iterations of the drivers, using an external USB sound card, disabling audio effects and other features within Windows, all with no success. My motherboard had a few other quirks within Win 7 64-bit, so I chalked up all the problems to being machine related. It didn't even cross my mind that something as relatively low-tech as a pair of speakers could be the problem (especially since they worked fine for a few minutes each time they were turned on).

I went for a few months assuming this was a computer issue, and I wasn't too concerned since I use a different computer as my primary machine and planned on upgrading the computer these were attached to in the near future. After upgrading, I of course still experienced the same issue, tried out the AV40s with my laptop and an MP3 player and isolated the issue as being the AV 40s.

At this point, after discovering this, I of course find out that I'm out of warranty. M-Audio wants $40/hour for repairs, plus the cost for parts, plus shipping costs there and back. Even if they charge me for only one hour of labor, it's not going to be cheap. At two hours, I might as well buy a new pair.

So after having Altec Lansing speakers that faithfully served me for a decade, I now have two expensive paper weights that served me faithfully for a few months. I'll be giving these to an electronics-savvy relative who might be able to fix them and use them himself. At least somebody might get some enjoyment out of them instead of months of headaches.

Last M-Audio product I'll ever buy. I bought a pair of refurbished Creative Gigaworks instead. I consider them an upgrade since they actually work as intended. Speakers, in this day and age, are something I expect to be extremely reliable.

5 out of 5 stars big. clear sound in a small package   September 3, 2010
Bradley Sharp (Californis USA)
These small speakers are amazing. Their sound quality and depth is well worth the small extra cost entailed. Also good is that they are heavy and do not fall over every time something touches them on the desk. Very highly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Still Fantastic Sound After Two Years   September 3, 2010
E. Scott (Pasadena, CA)
I purchased these M-Audio 40's in June of 2008 from Amazon and have never regretted the purchase. These speakers have provided me with clear sound that makes it sound live. I would recommend these speakers to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing computer speakers...   September 2, 2010
H. G. (California United States)
These speakers are incredible for the price and size. They are a little "hefty" for computer speakers but they sound great. Even when playing MP3 recordings (ripped from 1970s vinyl) they have wonderful separation and imaging (my description of a third dimension beyond stereo). And when you are sitting in front of your computer monitor for hours a day, you are sitting in exactly the correct position to hear the most from these speakers.

I have a pair of Dahlquist monitors (no longer in production) in my living room and a pair of Sonus Faber bookshelf speakers in my family room. They both sound amazing when you sit in exactly the right position to listen to them (which I never do). My last pair of computer speakers were Klipsch ProMedia Ultra 2.0 PC Speakers which were great as well. They didn't last long due to a faulty volume switch.

Enjoy these speakers.
