Worst sound card Ive ever owned June 2, 2009 G. Ludwig (TN) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Creative is one company I will never again support. They released a defective sound card with problems with static and crackling and never did anything to resolve the issue but instead tried to blame it on everyones motherboards or other issues and refused to take responsibility. They even went as far as to try and charge users for driver updates and silenced other users who tried to offer fixes.
Do not purchase anything from Creative. They care nothing for their consumers and sell awful products.
Excellent sound, questionable design February 22, 2009 B.Jones (Tampa Bay, FL) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This card makes excellent, clear sounds. I previously had an Audigy2 card and it's driver kept losing my 4.1 speaker settings (kept defaulting to 2.1). Since I've replaced that card with this x-Fi card, I've had no issues (on Asus & MSI motherboards). I don't listen to too much music anymore, but I can still hear the difference between flat music and vibrant music. The x-Fi card sounds waaay better than my old Audigy2 and makes music feel alive. If you can't hear the difference, then you must be tone deaf. I'm running on Win XP Pro 32-bit with a Logitech THX 4.1 speakers.
A problem I encountered is that this card REQUIRES a floppy disk drive power connector (4-pin). On my card, the power connector didn't sit/fit securely and the card wasn't recognized during the driver/application installs...kept saying something like you have no devices of this type installed or the card was installed incorrectly. I remedied this problem by removing the 4-pin's wires from the molex and with a screwdriver, individually pressed the wire's metal tips together. This forces the wire to pinch the card's power connector pins securely.
Ear Piercing Shriek = RMA Return September 10, 2008 Allen C. Piper (apo) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is the 2nd PCIx1 sound card that I bought for the same Gigabyte motherboard. The first card, an Asus Xonar card, crashed while playing certain games. So, I bought the tried and true Creative. After about 5 minutes of use it emitted an ear-piercing scream - along the lines of a smoke alarm, or building fire alarm. I tried different ports, disconnecting the I/O drive - reinstalling the software - typical things one does to try to avoid the RMA process. Amazon tells me that the replacement is enroute, and I hope that the new one doesn't give me the same problem - because if it does then I'd be looking at replacing the motherboard, assuming then that the sound card isn't the problem. If it does reoccur then I'll try the card in another pc to see what happens. Also, since my experiences with Vista have been less than stellar I've only used XP so I can't report on Vista performance.
Fantastic Sound Card! September 1, 2008 Mohammad S. Rahman (Pittsburgh, PA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Amazon was great about getting the sound card to me pretty soon after I ordered it. It didn't take very much work to get it up and running at all. I'm running windows XP, so that might have something to do with the ease of installation and use. I'm absolutely loving the sound that I'm getting out of my PC now!
X-FI Platinum is horrible June 11, 2008 Mark "Choo Choo" Twain 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
This product is garbage. Bought it because the specs looked awesome, but there is a HUGE catch: there is a well known issue that some of these cards (if not all) will introduce a popping noise into your audio. Creative acknowledges the snap-crackle-pop issue, but does nothing to remedy the problem. No patch, no replacements, nothing. This leads me to believe they have faulty hardware. They blamed certain motherboard manufacturers, but other people with other motherboards have experienced the exact same issues.
I wouldn't recommend creative products to my worst enemy after buying this card.
